Race-specific marathon coaching shaped by international racing experience
About
Michael Kimani Kamau is an elite Kenyan marathon runner who has raced at the top level across China, Europe, and the United States. Born in 1992, he trains inside the Kenyan distance-running culture that shapes his approach to high-mileage endurance work, the same environment he now draws on for coaching.
His marathon personal best of 2:08:19 came at the 2023 Shenzhen Marathon, where he won in a course record, breaking the previous mark by 85 seconds. His half marathon best of 1:00:14 was set in Lille, France (2022), and his 10K road best of 28:46 was set in Valenciennes, France. On the world stage, he has peaked at World Athletics road-running rank #72.
In March 2026 he led the Los Angeles Marathon by 56 seconds at the 40-kilometer mark before being misdirected by a lead vehicle and a spectator in the final 400 meters, falling at the finish line and losing by 0.01 seconds in what became the closest finish in the race's history. He also placed 3rd at the 2025 Wuhan Marathon (2:09:28) and 2nd at the 2025 Bloomsday 12K, giving him a racing résumé that spans road miles from 10K to the marathon and a specific feel for international courses.
Michael's coaching is built around that experience. He prescribes high weekly mileage to develop the aerobic base, then layers in marathon-pace long runs and controlled threshold sessions during the build phase. Where he differs most from a template is pacing strategy, fueling decisions, and race-day execution: places where amateur marathoners often leave time on the table, and places he has had to solve under pressure at the elite level.

He prescribes high weekly mileage to develop the aerobic base, then layers in marathon-pace long runs and controlled threshold sessions during the build phase. He draws on his international racing experience across Chinese, European, and American courses to coach pacing strategy, fueling decisions, and race-day execution: places where amateur marathoners often leave time on the table.
