1:30:00 and 1:30:00
6:52 per mile from the start line to the finish.
1:30:54 then 1:29:06
6:56 per mile for the first half, 6:48 for the second. You run the second half 1:48 faster and still finish in 3:00.
You can print either plan on a 3:00 pace band: pick the strategy before you print.
Race times that match a 3:00 marathon
By Riegel's formula, a common race-time predictor, a 3:00 marathon is the same effort as these shorter races.
- Half marathon
- 1:26:20
- 10K
- 39:08
- 5K
- 18:46
If your recent race times are slower than these, 3:00 is a stretch goal for now. The formula assumes marathon training: a runner with a fast half marathon and short long runs often finishes slower than it predicts. Use the marathon readiness score to check your mileage and long runs against the goal.
Is 3:00 a Boston qualifying time?
A 3:00:00 meets the Boston Marathon qualifying standard for men 35 and older, and for women and non-binary runners of every age (2026 and 2027 standards, age on race day). Meeting the standard does not guarantee entry. For the 2027 race, a qualifier needed to be 5:17 under their standard for a guaranteed place; 1,000 more places went by random draw to qualifiers who missed that cutoff.
Who runs 3:00, and what it takes
Sub-3 is the classic benchmark for male marathoners and a strong open-class time for women. It meets the Boston qualifying standard for men 35 and older and for women of every age; men 18 to 34 need 2:55.
A runner breaking three hours typically trains 60 to 80 miles a week, with at least one long run over 20 miles, threshold work at 4:00 to 4:10 per km, and a marathon-pace session most weeks of the build. The wall at 35K usually comes from pacing: the runner who goes through halfway in 1:28:30 instead of 1:30:00 is the one who slows late. Our coaches build second-half discipline first, then speed.
